Bringing Birmingham's Youth Work Sector Together
The Birmingham Youth Work Partnership (BYWP) was created from a shared belief: that young people in Birmingham deserve the very best opportunities to thrive, and that youth organisations collaboration leads to stronger outcomes when they work together.
Birmingham is one of Europe's youngest cities, full of talent, energy and potential. Yet for many years, youth work across the city has faced significant challenges. Funding pressures, workforce shortages and increasing demand have left many organisations working in isolation, often competing for limited resources while trying to meet the growing needs of young people.
In 2024, a group of youth work practitioners, community organisations, faith groups and universities came together to ask an important question:
How can we strengthen youth work Birmingham by working collectively rather than separately?
From those conversations, the Birmingham Youth Work Partnership was born.
Built on Relationships
BYWP brings together organisations and individuals who share a commitment to high-quality youth work. Our members come from a wide range of backgrounds and settings, including community organisations, faith groups, youth charities, universities and neighbourhood-based projects.
What unites us is not a funding programme or contract. It is a shared belief in the value of youth work and the difference it makes in young people's lives.
From the beginning, the partnership has been built on trust, collaboration and mutual support. We believe that everyone has something valuable to contribute, whether they are a volunteer, youth worker, manager, academic or community leader.
Reclaiming the Value of Youth Work
The partnership emerged at a time when many people across the sector felt that the true purpose of youth work was becoming lost.
Youth work is more than delivering services or achieving targets. At its heart, it is about building trusted relationships, creating opportunities, supporting personal growth and helping young people develop a sense of belonging, confidence and hope.
BYWP exists to champion these values and ensure that youth work remains recognised as a vital part of Birmingham's communities.
